GULLAH ART BYRenée
"If'in oohna lik wa e see, chat wit me!"
Saundra “Renee” Smithis a native of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, and a self -taught Gullah artist.
Her creative paintings on canvas, board, or tin using acrylics, reflects her memories of growing up Gullah on her beautiful island home. Her work depicts the beauty of the salt marshes, tidal creeks, palmetto trees, and the culture of the Gullah people who inhabit, the once isolated, sea island.
Renee’s husband, Michael, inspired her self-taught talent by persuading her to pick up a paint brush for the first time in April 2008 following a series of very tragic and traumatic events in her life. Renee's gift of art is spiritual and transforming for her collectors.
